[New York City, NY] — The Action Center announced today that a film it is featured in, How to Let Go of the World (and Love all the Things Climate Can’t Change), written and directed by Josh Fox, will make its world premiere in the U.S Documentary Section of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

How to Let Go of the World (and Love all the Things Climate Can’t Change), directed by Oscar Nominated director Josh Fox (GASLAND) investigates the effects of climate change – the greatest threat our world has ever known. Traveling to 12 countries on 6 continents, the film acknowledges that it may be too late to stop some of the worst consequences and asks, what is it that climate change can’t destroy? What is so deep within us that no calamity can take it away?

The Action Center, which helps those who live 200% below the poverty level, is featured in the film because of the impact that the catastrophic storm Hurricane Sandy had on the community that the center serves in Rockaway Queens, NY. The film shows how the Action Center led the community into becoming a shining beacon of resilience as they continue to work tirelessly more than 1000 days later with those who were left destitute from the storm.

Mr. Fox was compelled to include the Action Center in his film after becoming aware of their work helping those gravely affected by the hurricane. At a recent screening of the film, Mr. Fox said, “the thousands and millions on the front lines when the waves come crashing in because of climate change need to know that community is most important. That it’s places like the Action Center, and specifically in this film it is the Action Center, that show you how to deal with this, how you come together as a community and provide inspiration to the rest of the world.”

For the last 15 years, the Action Center has been one of the last lines of defense for the Rockaway’s poorest. They act as a one-stop-shop for people’s basic needs, providing food and clothes and offering dozens of education and empowerment programs for children and adults. They work to provide whatever people need to get on their feet and out of poverty. They provide 25,000 meals a month, address mental health concerns, and work to mitigate job and home loss.

“We made a strategic decision during the chaos of the storm, that if we were going to come out of this stronger we had to approach this with a long-term and two fold vision,” said Executive Director & Co-Founder of the Action Center, Aria Doe. “Sandy forced us to face an emergency together; to be on the same page as a community. The storm helped us create family out of chaos, victors and not victims, and to serve as a beacon of hope and blueprint for other communities facing the same set of circumstance. We are so proud and honored that Josh Fox saw the impact of our actions, and included our story in his film.”

The Sundance Film Festival takes place January 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. The Festival is one of the world’s premiere places to debut new independent films and over the course of its more than 30-year history has launched films including WhiplashBoyhoodBeasts of the Southern WildFruitvale StationLittle Miss Sunshinesex, lies, and videotapeReservoir Dogs; and Napoleon Dynamite.

Previous films by Josh Fox include GASLAND (2010, distributed by HBO) and GASLAND PART II (2013, distributed by HBO) and MEMORIAL DAY (2008, Artists Public Domain, C-Hundred).

GASLAND went on to win the 2010 Sundance Special Jury Award, a Prime time Emmy and a 2011 Oscar best documentary category nomination. It was seen by over 51 million worldwide.

Sandy Rememberence Night Nov 1st

The night of Nov. 1st  was moving beyond words… and one of the happiest experienced by the Action Center… the folks in these photos saved lives and helped lift up and save our community.

On Nov 1st we got to thank after 3 years many of them… it was family, war comrades, survivors of a crash… bonded in ways few can experience, enriched from sharing our vulnerability, and seeding our resilience…

Roger, Jessica, Josh, Miriam, Michelle, and all the people we honored the word has not been invented, that could ever thank you enough… it was so wonderful to see you!

Enviormental Summit

So truly proud of our staff, our PS 183 PTA and Parent coordinator partners, and our wonderful Rockaway Community!

Nearly 200! TWO HundrED! Residents showed up for the Grassroots Solution Tour!

Amazing. It was an engaging, active and proactive night of discussion about real solutions to what so many of us face! We also got a wonderful presentation of Josh Fox’s final climate change film which includes the Action Center and will air on HBO in 2016.

We were entertained by Bethany Yarrow and Rufus and the crowd was on fire! We finished with breaking bread together.

When we look at the smiling diverse faces in the audience, we know it was a wonderful night for “All” of the Rockaways. We came together in ways we haven’t been together in to long of a time.

A Day of Beauty

Thanks so much to the wonderful folks at https://www.facebook.com/ViveStyle and the Ammon Carver Salon, for pampering our moms, with the same love they give to the community.

Each week they volunteer their time, strength and energy to help seed the community and keep it strong. It was such an honor to give them some of the love back.
