For seven kids at The Action Center, an after school community center for underprivileged kids in Far Rockaway, this was something they would never forget. Not only did the kids ranging in age from 10 to 14 years old get to attend the last international friendly match before the World Cup kicked off on Thursday, but they also got to meet international soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
On June 7th the Action Center in Partnership with Save the Children and DYCD held the first ever community prep Rally. It was a wonderful, wonderful Saturday event. We exceeded all our goals. Nearly 600 residents were in attendance. We trained over 250 adults, and trained 160 non-action center kids, along with the 150 Action Center kids who’d been trained during after-school in disaster prep and entertained another 60 toddlers and teens.
Three Rockaway communities came together Ocean Bay, Far Rockaway and Hammels…which was an event within it’s self, proving that the community is truly transformed and united.
The NOAA National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their report on the upcoming hurricane season. Their prediction; a mild slow season. As Action Center Executive Director Aria Doe pointed out during a guest appearance on America Tonight, this is the same prediction they made in 2012 prior to hurricane Sandy, and preparation in poorer communities despite devastation in 2012, is virtually the same.
